In 2014, the year when Bloomberg MSCI Global Green Bond Index (then called the Barclays MSCI Global Green Bond Index) was launched, the market of self-labelled ESG bonds was small and homogenous. This previously niche market has grown in size, the objectives and definitions of the numerous sustainable investment instruments have become extremely complex to navigate. The year 2021 saw issuance of self-labelled bonds distributed across four broad categories namely Green, Social, Sustainability and Sustainability-linked bonds. But even within these broad categories, more narrowly defined thematic bonds continue to be issued: Blue Economy bonds, SDG bonds, COVID Response bonds, etc. Navigating such a diverse field of debt instruments and seeing the true colors of sustainable investment options is becoming increasingly difficult.
