Introductory Skills (no prerequisites)

For newcomers to financial communications or experienced corporate communications, investor relations and financial PR practitioners with limited financial expertise.

  • Capital Markets Essentials Coming Soon
    If you are just getting started in IR or corporate communications, or if you need to understand capital markets and the key audiences in order to be effective in your role, then this course is a must. Understand the current environment; see how the capital markets big picture fits together and appreciate the perspectives of investors, analyst and the financial media. You’ll understand how and why companies issue shares and bonds, how they are traded and how listed companies are expected to communicate.
  • Financial Information Essentials | Coming Soon
    Understand the jargon of earnings releases and annual reports and understand how a company’s financial statements work. This covers balance sheets, income statements and cash flows – what they mean and how they fit together. Look at key metrics such as revenue, EBIT, EBITDA and net income; and financial ratios such as leverage and profit margins – across a range of sectors. Finally, consider what your key target audiences are looking for in earnings and how you can add value to the earnings process.

Developing/Leadership Skills

For corporate communications, investor relations and financial PR practitioners who would like to develop their financial skills. Must have taken Capital Markets Essentials or have equivalent knowledge.

  • Shareholder Value and Telling a Great Investment Story | Coming Soon
    Learn what shareholder value really means; how companies go about creating it; and how to tell a compelling investment story. Examine what value creation looks like from the shareholder’s perspective and management’s role in value creation. Review key requirements such as growth and returns above cost of capital; learn how this breaks down and links back to strategy and key performance indicators. Learn how to tell a great investment story in twelve simple steps, using examples from companies that do it well.
  • Understanding & Communicating Company Value | Coming Soon
    Understand how companies are valued by investors and analysts. Discover what is meant by intrinsic value (including the key inputs to discounted cash flow models) and valuation using multiples. We also consider valuation in an M&A context. Learn what you can do in communications terms to ensure that your company’s stock is fairly valued.

Developed specifically for IR and corporate communications by FinanceTalking, NIRI’s financial training courses are designed to help you understand the specific financial concepts you need to communicate your company’s financial story effectively. Courses are available on a variety of topics and learning levels.

Computer

These virtual workshops are run in small groups with experienced tutors who are adept at adjusting the course material to suit the attendees on the day.

Your instructor will be enthusiastic and knowledgeable, with a talent for making complex concepts simple. Most importantly, participants leave these courses with the tools in place to use what they have learned back at work.

Courses are two hours in length and held on two consecutive days. These programs are offered at times convenient for both east and west coast participants. The Zoom platform is used to deliver these virtual events. you will be able to discuss case studies via breakout groups and participate in quizzes and polls.

Policies

All cancellation and refund requests must be submitted in writing via email to ProfessionalDevelopment@niri.org. Cancellation requests received up to two weeks (10 business days) before the event will be refunded in full, less a $50 administrative fee. No refunds will be given for cancellation or postponement requests received within two weeks (10 business days) of the event, including no-shows. All refunds will be processed within 10 business days of confirmation and in the same manner as original payment. NIRI reserves the right to cancel an event if minimum enrollment is not met. NIRI membership is in the name of the individual, not the employer organization; member rates for events and other benefits apply only to the individual member, not all members of an organization. Registrations are nontransferable between events. Sharing or splitting access is strictly prohibited.

IRC credential holders can claim up to 2 professional development units (PDUs) for completing a single course.
