This two-part discussion will focus on two key global trends in Investor Relations that affect US and international IR professionals. These sessions are designed to provide a forum for education and discussion about important IR topics in a global context. Whether you practice IR in Seattle or in Singapore, these sessions will allow you to share experiences and learn best practices from your global IR peers.
Part 1: Embracing Diverse IR Skill Sets to Maximize Your IR Activities
IR professionals come from diverse backgrounds (including the sell side, buy side, other internal corporate roles, and previous investor relations roles), and locations, each bringing its own unique skill set. How do these different professional backgrounds affect how an individual sees their own investor relations roles and responsibilities? Learn the focus and differences that stem from each background, and how to capitalize on your own expertise to create an effective IR program. We will use data from BNY Mellon’s 2017 Investor Relations Survey to identify areas of difference across the globe, and then discuss the advantages of differing backgrounds with IR officers from different global locations and professional backgrounds.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand advantages of different backgrounds of IR professionals, both geographically and professionally, to use the best habits and ideas to create an effective IR program
Speakers:

Part 2: Who is Buying Your Equity Today? How to Engage with the Changing Shareholder Base
The shareholder base for all companies is changing due to the increase in passive investment in the US, a trend which is expected to continue. While the majority of passive investment is in US funds and US companies, this trends affects all global companies, especially those that want to work with their US shareholders on voting and ESG engagement. Additionally, some of the changes from MiFID II are expected to lead to growth in ETFs in Europe. This session will explore the investment decision making roles at both active and passive funds, and touch on the process and possibilities for ESG engagement. US IROs will benefit from the experience of their global counterparts in ESG engagement, while global companies can share in the experience of their US counterparts in understanding this part of their investor base. A global exchange of ideas which will include the investment funds directly.
Learning Objectives:

- Understand possibilities for ESG engagement with active and passive funds
- How to adapt the investor engagement plans to the evolving shareholder base
