One of NIRI's four primary mission areas is advocacy regarding regulatory initiatives impacting the investor relations profession. This important function aggregates the opinion of NIRI's 4,000 plus members, representing $5.4 trillion in combined public company market capitalization, bringing the IRO's voice to the regulatory table in Washington D.C. This key member benefit is particularly critical in today's rapidly changing regulatory atmosphere. When appropriate, NIRI collaborates with related professional and other organizations in the area of advocacy. An example of this is NIRI's involvement with the Shareholders Communications Coalition and its work toward proxy reform. Another advocacy resource is the Emerging Issues Committee of the NIRI Board of Directors. Charged with identifying emerging issues and using our research and other tools to provide insight and assistance to members, this group is working to ensure that IR has a seat at the table on critical industry issues in Washington and beyond.
